The Belt of the Most Holy Mother of God
The Belt of the Most Holy Mother of God is a sacred item with a profound spiritual history, carefully preserved in the Orthodox Church for nearly two thousand years. According to tradition, before Her Dormition, the Theotokos removed Her belt and gave it to the Apostle Thomas as a sign of comfort and a testimony to Her ascension into Heaven. Since then, veneration of the Holy Belt has spread throughout the Orthodox world.
What Does the Holy Belt Help With?
With faith and prayer, the Belt of the Mother of God is worn in the following situations:
Infertility and conception difficulties - women who long to conceive wear the belt reverently, praying to the Most Holy Theotokos for the gift of a child.
Pregnancy - the belt is worn during pregnancy for protection and strength throughout the journey of carrying and giving birth.
Illness - it is worn while reading prayers for healing and asking the Mother of God for intercession.
Times of inner anxiety or sorrow - as a source of spiritual comfort and peace.
During long journeys or before important events - as a spiritual safeguard and blessing.
This is not just a piece of cloth - it is a sign of faith and prayer. Even touching it, when done with sincere prayer to the Mother of God, can bring comfort, hope, and strength of spirit.
How Is the Belt Used?
The belt is typically worn close to the body - either directly on the skin or over underclothing, most commonly around the stomach or lower back.
While wearing it, one may say a prayer to the Theotokos - such as the “Hail, O Virgin Theotokos” or read the Akathist.
The belt may be worn as needed, for any length of time - some remove it at night, others prefer to keep it on, depending on their personal sense of peace.
After wearing, the belt should be stored in a clean and respectful place, such as near icons or other holy items.
This belt has been touched to the Holy Belt of the Theotokos on Mount Athos and has been blessed in the Holy Land - at the Tomb of the Mother of God and on the Stone of Anointing in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.
